This wine has been in the planning since 1995 when Steve Smith was able to select a cutting from a healthy, single older vine in a parcel of Le Montrachet during the 1995 vintage. The grower provided approval on the condition of anonymity. This selection was officially imported into New Zealand and after quarantine was planted in a somewhat undistinguished vineyard in Hawke’s Bay.

Steve retraced this lineage and received vines in 2017 to plant in his Omahu vineyard in the Gimblett Gravels.

New Zealand is also the beneficiary of having a clone that traces its heritage back to an import into California from Meursault in 1882. The aim was always to re-unite these two selections originating from Burgundy over 100 years apart into a single wine of heritage from a single vineyard. This is the very first wine of this heritage from anywhere in the world.

Hawke's Bay

Hand-picked, whole bunch pressed direct to barrel. 100% barrel fermented in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques, from Berger and Mercurey. Fermented with 100% ambient yeasts, 100% natural malolactic, no additions. Élevage took place without sulphur for nine months. A single new barrel was selected just prior to the following vintage and aged for a further 6 months in a small 225L stainless steel barrel before being bottled by hand, unfined and unfiltered. Sealed in Diam 10 cork.

High density (6,666 vines/ha).
Co-ferment of Mendoza and Monte
(a selection made in 1995 from Montrachet)
Regeneratively farmed. Certified Sustainable.

Drink 2027–2040

This is a difficult wine to be objective about, there is just too much heritage and patience involved. This first vintage has provided an exhilarating look into the future for a wine with a very storied heritage… already.
